The business of the Group originated in 1971 by Mr. Tan Tin Nam under the name of Yong Nam Engineering Works ("YNEW").  From a small business of providing Mechanical Engineering services with an initial staff strength of five site workers, the Group has grown over the years into a multi-disciplinary engineering and construction company involved in structural steelwork, Mechanical Engineering and specialist Civil Engineering.

YNEW operated mainly as a sub-contractor for local Mechanical Engineering companies. At the end of 1971, YNEW was awarded its first major contract to install the PSA No. 1 and No. 2 container cranes for the Port of Singapore Authority.

Significant Milestones

1974
– Incorporation of Yong Nam Engineering & Trading Sdn Bhd ("YNET") presently known as Yongnam Engineering Sdn Bhd ("YESB").

Between 1974 and 1982, YNET undertook a number of Mechanical Engineering projects before it was awarded the Langkawi Cement Plant project - a milestone for YNET in establishing its business in Malaysia. This project required YNET to build steel-framed buildings, jetty conveyor and equipment with an aggregate tonnage of 9,070 and had a final contract value of approximately RM11.0 million.

1975 – YNEW changed its name to Yong Nam Engineering & Construction (Private) Limited ("YNEC").

1977 – YNEC expanded business to include fabrication and erection of structural steelwork to complement its civil, structural and Mechanical Engineering capabilities. The first fabrication yard of the Group was established on rented premises in Tampines.

1978 – YNEC developed the technical expertise for its involvement in specialist Civil Engineering works for the construction of the Benjamin Sheares Bridge at East Coast Parkway.

1984 – YNEC expanded its application of the techniques in structural steelwork to a steel braced cofferdam for the construction of the OUB Centre basement in Raffles Place. This method involved professionally designed steel strutting which allows faster and safer construction of temporary strutting works. It is particularly effective and is increasingly being used for projects in Singapore and the region.

1985 to 1989 – YNEC was involved in the construction of the Mass Rapid Transit ("MRT") projects. In total, YNEC was awarded contracts for 13 MRT stations. These contracts comprised the supply and erection of structural steel roofs, the erection of pre-cast concrete arch elements and steel cofferdam, construction of pile caps, footings and viaduct columns of a 7.7 kilometer stretch of the system.

1990 – YNEC was awarded the first steel-framed structure project, a 30-storey Ocean Tower. YNEC demonstrated its capability in the construction of medium high-rise structures.

1991 – YNEC was appointed a subcontractor for the Suntec City project, the largest steel-framed project in Singapore. The Group was responsible for the design and installation of all temporary steel works, and the erection of the steel frame and exoskeleton roof. Despite the complex geometry of the roof and the special construction requirements for the building, the Group completed its part of the project ahead of schedule.

1991 – YNEC was awarded a contract to supply and erect various steelwork components and structures in the Mobil Refinery in Jurong.

1992 – YNEC won the bid for the design, fabrication and construction of a $30.7 million aircraft hangar in Brunei. This project involved the construction of a long-span tubular space-framed structure, which was designed by structural consultants appointed by YNEC. The steel structures were fabricated in Singapore and shipped to Brunei over a period of approximately four months to meet the target project deadline for the completion of the erection of the structure. Following the successful completion of the first hangar, YNEC was awarded a contract for the design, fabrication and erection of a second similar structure on a site adjacent to the first.

1994 – Yongnam Holdings (Private) Limited was incorporated.

1995 – YNEC invested approximately $6 million in 8,000 tons of steel which was fabricated into modular components for the modular strutting system. This formed YNEC's initial investment of strutting system components for use in the construction of basements for buildings. This system has proven to be particularly effective and is increasingly being used in projects, in Singapore and the region.

In addition to the involvement in the fabrication and erection of steel structures in Singapore, YNEC also supplied fabricated steel structures to Malaysia, Brunei, Japan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Argentina, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Egypt and Indonesia.

1998 – The Group accepted an offer from JTC for the allocation of a piece of land at Private Lot A17859, Tuas South Street 5. A modern steel fabrication complex was erected on the site and the Group consolidated its operations in Tuas in 2000.

October 1999 – Yongnam Holdings Limited was listed on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES).

2000 – Centralisation of Singapore's operations in Tuas premises
